Vermiculite Expansion

Vermiculite is the geological name given to a group of hydrated laminar minerals which are aluminum-iron magnesium silicates, resembling Mica in appearance. Rock and other impurities are removed from the crude ore which is then crushed and sorted into sizes.

When subjected suddenly to high temperatures the ore exfoliates (expands) to many times its original volume, due to the interlaminar generation of steam. The steam forces the layers apart and turns the dense flakes of ore into lightweight porous granules containing millions of minute air layers. Exfoliated vermiculite has a high insulation value, is lightweight and will absorb and hold a wide range of liquids.

TYPICAL USES

As a packing material for transporting dangerous, corrosive and flammable chemicals (see UPS and D.O.T. regulations for listings). It is light, clean and easily poured around irregular shaped objects and provides an excellent baffle against impact shock plus absorbent qualities for spillage.

As an absorbent vermiculite will absorb 4.2 times its weight of water and 3.1 times its weight of oil. Excellent for clean-up of oil, fuel, process waste, inks and other similar spills.

Vermiculite in horticulture is an ideal growing medium as it may be used alone, in hydroponics, seed encapsulation, soil conditioner or as a carrier and extender for fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides.

As a masonry insulation vermiculite is both rot proof and vermin proof and provides an inorganic insulation for brick cavity and concrete block walls. It is capable of supporting its own weight without settling and has excellent free flowing and non-bridging characteristics. Conforms to ASTM C516-80.

As a lightweight concrete aggregate vermiculite is mixed with Portland cement and water, plus a plasticiser if desired. Vermiculite concrete is used for "insitu" roof and floor screeds. It is easily mixed and placed by hand or mechanical equipment. Vermiculite concrete can be cut, sawn, nailed or screwed. Conforms to ASTM C332-87 and Underwriter's Laboratories approved.

As a high temperature insulation for use in refractory bricks and brick kilns. Both crude and exfoliated vermiculite are used in steelworks and foundries generally as loosefill, sometimes mixed with an exothermic material.

As a bulker in animal feed vermiculite is an outstanding support material for carrying a wide range of nutrients.
