Cementitious Fire proofing

Fire protection of structures
Fire Protection of a structure

Fendolite is a single package factory controlled premix based on vermiculite and Portland cement specifically developed for application to elements in exterior environments and interior situations where mechanical damage is a factor for consideration.

Fendolite provides fire protection in petrochemical plants and refineries for structural steel, vessel skirts and supports, sphere legs and pressurized vessels. Fendolite also offers protection for nuclear and conventional power plants, pharmaceutical facilities, manufacturing plants and many commercial buildings where maximum durability is required.

Outstanding Characteristics

Tested in accordance with U. L. 1709 Rapid Temperature Rise Fire Test.

Hard and durable finish that will indent rather than shatter on impact. Excellent adhesive properties.

Reinforcement optional for interior applications depending on service.

Single package formulation requires only the addition of water at the jobsite. Easy to handle, apply, clean up and repair for tie-in work.

Creates no known health hazards. Asbestos free and non-toxic.

Fendolite is available in two types; M-II for fast economical application by spray and TG a hand applied version, for use where spray application is difficult or not permitted. Type TG is ideally suited for patching and minor repairs.

Fire Protection
Type M-II and Type TG are classified by Underwriters Laboratories for use in the following constructions:
  • Columns
  • Floor Beams
  • Floor-Ceiling Assemblies
  • Roof Beams
  • Roof-Ceiling Assemblies
Further, Factory Mutual approves Type M-II for LPG Tanks and Process Structure.

Substrate Preparation
The substrate shall be clean, dry and free from dust, loose millscale, loose rust, oil or any other condition preventing good adhesion.

Fendolite can be applied to unprimed and most primed steel work. Alkali sensitive primers, e.g. those containing an alkyd binder must be sealed with an approved alkali resistant membrane before application of Fendolite. Where steel is to be painted, an alkali resistant paint such as chlorinated rubber, vinyl (solvent based), two pack epoxy should be specified.

Application
Application must be carried out by an applicator recognized by us. Fendolite should be applied in accordance with the latest Application Instructions.

Spray Application: Type M-II
Mixed with potable water and applied by spraying machine approved by us. Fendolite may be float finished using conventional hand tools.

Hand Application: Type TG
In areas where spray application is difficult or not permitted, the use of Type TG is recommended. This product is designed for application by hand. Mix with potable water and apply using conventional plasters tools.

Practical Coverage
This is influenced by mixing, pumping and spraying techniques which can affect applied density and wastage. The wastage factor will depend on such details as the degree of site control, size and shape of items being sprayed and frequency of stoppages and is best determined by experience.

Mesh Retention
Most fire tests conducted have been carried out without mesh retention to demonstrate the ability of Fendolite to stay in place under the most severe fire conditions. However, for maximum long term in service durability, we recommend the use of lightweight mesh retention for exterior work and for interior use where vibration or the possibility of mechanical damage exists.

Limitations During Application
The product should not be applied unless the substrate and air temperatures are at least 36oF and rising or if the substrate or air temperatures are less than 40oF and falling. Maximum air and substrate temperatures 115oF.

Surface temperature should be at least 4oF above dewpoint temperature.

Durability
Fendolite is a durable material suitable for direct exposure to exterior weather generally without topcoating.

Overcoating
Under certain circumstances a topcoating system may be considered desirable i.e. protection from hydrocarbon/oil spillages or for improved resistance to fungal, algal and bacterial growth. See Topcoat for application over Fendolite. For further information data sheets are available on request.

Health and Safety Precautions

Fendolite is asbestos and fiber free, does not emit toxic or hazardous fumes before, during and after application, or under exposure to fire.

Provided that the correct standards of hygiene are maintained and safe working practice is followed, there are no known hazards in the handling of Fendolite. However, as it is cement based, and cement powder mixed with water releases alkali, the normal precautions applying to cement based products should be taken when handling, mixing and applying Fendolite.
