Mandolite CP-2 is one of an extensive product line of proven premixed fire endurance products manufactured by NEWKEM. CP-2 is intended for the fire protection of internal steel beams, columns, joists, steel floors and roof decks. Applied by spray, CP-2 provides an attractive, monolithic, textured finish which is light weight, durable and economical. CP-2 is the result of years of research and development aimed towards giving the highest performance and best all around solution to passive fire protection requirements of the commercial construction industry.

Outstanding Characteristics
  • Single package formulation requires only the addition of water at the job-site. No corrosive additives required.

  • UL classified for use over post removal encapsulants I.C.B.O. Approved.

  • Provides a hard monolithic surface which is durable and non-dusting.

  • Fast economical installation. Suitable for high distance pumping.

Health and Safety

Mandolite CP-2 is asbestos free, does not emit toxic or hazardous fumes before, during or after application, or under exposure to fire.

Provided that correct standards of hygiene are maintained and safe work practice is followed, there are no known hazards in the handling of Mandolite CP-2. However, as it is cement based, normal precautions relevant to cement based products should be taken when handling, mixing or applying Mandolite CP-2.

Fire Protection

Mandolite CP-2 has undergone fire resistance testing and appraisal at Underwriters Laboratories and is classified for use in the following constructions:

  • Columns
  • Floor Beams
  • Floor-Ceiling Assemblies
  • Roof Beams
  • Roof-Ceiling Assemblies

Substrate Preparation

The substrate shall be clean, dry and free from dust, loose millscale, loose rust, oil or any other condition preventing good adhesion.

Mandolite CP-2 can be applied to unprimed and most primed steelwork. All primer systems to which Mandolite CP-2 is applied must be compatible with an alkaline pH of 12-12.5. Primers based on chlorinated rubber, solvent based vinyl and two pack epoxy resins are normally suitable. Alkali sensitive primers, e.g. those containing an alkyd binder must be sealed with an approved alkali resistant membrane before application of Mandolite CP-2.

Practical Coverage

This is influenced by mixing, pumping and spraying techniques which can affect applied density and wastage. The wastage factor will depend on such details as the degree of site control, size and shape of items being sprayed and frequency of stoppages and is best determined by experience.

Application

Application must be carried out by an applicator recognized by us. Mandolite CP-2 should be applied in accordance with the latest Application Instructions.

Method of Application
Mixed with potable water and applied by spray machine. A trowel grade patching mix is available for minor repairs.

Limitations During Application
The product should not be applied unless the substrate and air temperatures are at least 36oF and rising or if the substrate or air temperatures are less than 39oF and falling. Maximum air and substrate temperatures 115oF.

Surface temperature should be at least 4oF above dewpoint temperature.

Durability

Being a low density material, Mandolite CP-2 should not be subjected to excessive mechanical damage.

Mandolite CP-2 may be applied within environments where limited exposure to the elements is likely throughout the building phase of the project (e.g. perimeter beams). Mandolite CP-2 is not however recommended for use in areas where it will be fully exposed to exterior weather conditions for an indefinite period. In such situations Fendolite M-II is recommended.

Centralized Pumping

Site accessibility is often very limited and under such conditions it may be considered desirable to centralize fire protection operations.

Typically, at an early planning stage, all spray equipment and material storage may be predesignated a zone from which the fire protection function may be carried out without inconvenience to other trades.

Mandolite CP-2 and Fendolite M-II are compatible with current centralized pumping requirements, thereby combining the maximum on-site efficiency with the benefits of vermiculite cement sprays.
